Macaroot is an endocrine adaptogen, meaning it adapts to whatever your body needs at the time. It does not contain any hormones but just supports your body to make the right amount of each hormone by nourishing your adrenals which regulate your hormone balance. In other words, if you are producing too much of a particular hormone, maca will lower the production of that hormone; but if you're producing too little, it will increase the production of it.
Dr. Roundtree states that it is also safe in pregnancy and postpartum. It is a food in the radish and mustard family. Peruvians eat Maca root, the women/girls starting when they are 3 years old.
It is naturally high in minerals such as calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc, six known sterols, up to 20 essential fatty acids, lipids, fiber, carbohydrates, protein, and complete amino acids and B vitamins...it is a super food!
Trim Healthy Mama recommends it highly in the "Balance" chapter as well. see chapter 31, Mama's Balancing Act. They suggest the starting dosage at 1 tsp and maxing at a Tbs (three teaspoons) in your favorite foods since raw macaroot can be hard on the tummy. My favorite source for organic powdered maca root is pipingrock.com
How do I use it? I treat it like peanut butter powder or pair it with cocoa powder in my baking or THM big boy smoothies or THM fat stripping frappas. MIMs and Muffins made with it are most often found at our house and my girls chomp them down. It is excellent mixed into morning oatmeals and tossed into THM no bake fudge cookies (see recipe link below). Another yummy addition is adding it to THM peanut butter cookies. (another recipe link provided) It has a "malt" nut-like flavor and not so great alone but excellent with mixed with other ingredients.
